Twitter Revolutionizing The Porn Business

breeolsen_twitterThe adult industry has always been at the forefront of technology and now porn stars are all over social media, especially Twitter. But this is no joke; they use using social media as a business tool, building their personal brands and engaging with fans. Adult films started in theaters, then moved into the home with VHS and DVD, and finally right into your lap with the Internet. It’s a progression of intimacy if you will that is being taken to a new level with the ability of people to interact directly with the stars.

For the stars it’s also a chance to possibly broaden their audience and show a little of their off-screen life. It’s the kind of behind the scenes content that I think works so well for people who are “famous” and not so regularly accessible. Other porn stars are using it as a bridge to a more mainstream audience. If they can find some acceptability there, it could open up a new world of non-porn work.

Industry execs are using Twitter as well for feedback on their movies. Says one executive:

“Twitter is like an instant focus group,” explained Palumbo. “It’s not going to go away, it is the future. From our company’s point of view, it’s pure customer service.”

It’s an unsavory business to many, but a business nonetheless it is and the industry is being smart about how they tackle social media. What I appreciate most about the adult industry is how they have handled all the challenges and disruptive technology that has been thrown at them over the years. Their whole business model has changed several times over with the advent of home video and then the Internet. Each time, the industry ran headlong into the storm and figured out how to thrive. I can’t say so much for the music, film and television industries.
