Many times, companies are acquired not for their products, but for the talent they possess. This is especially true in Silicon Valley where engineering talent is always at a premium. Just read the statement Facebook made after acquiring Spool.
“The Spool team has deep expertise in mobile software development and a passion for making content easy to consume. We’re excited for the team to join and accelerate their vision at Facebook.”
No word on the product Spool made, Facebook is quickly acquiring companies with superior mobile development talent. What do you think Instagram was all about? Well, yes, that one was about the user base as well. It’s too bad for the customers who loved the product, as that will be shut down pretty quickly. It’s pretty obvious mobile is a primary focus for Facebook this year and they are moving aggressively to ramp up their talent pool. I would expect some new things coming by the end of the year or early next.
